PYGMY HIPPO DIET IN THE
WILD
Diet in the Wild: The Pygmy hippopotamus is a herbivore and feed
on vegetation, such as, succulents, tender shoots, Water plants, grasses,
Fruit, leaves, roots, grasses, and fallen fruit. Pygmy hippopotamus
also feed on aquatic plants, unlike Nile hippopotamuses, .
The pygmy hippo resting places are usually in wet areas, for food they
go to higher grounds. Feeding takes place mainly at night. They usually
begin feeding in the afternoon, and continue until midnight. Hippopotamuses
have multi-chambered stomachs that function like that of ruminants,
however they do not chew cud. They do enjoy some of the advantages of
rumination, but are classified as pseudoruminants.
The Pygmy hippo digest food
in their complex stomach with 3 chambers.
